About this course: Join this Alumni Panel session What Next? Postdoc Career Steps as part of National Postdoc Appreciation Week 2025! Hear from three Exeter alumni who have gone on to use their researcher skills and backgrounds in higher education institutes and beyond into diverse sectors. We are looking forward to welcoming: - Dr Elizabeth Laruni, who gained a PhD in History and is now Conflict Sensitivity and Gender Lead with the charity International Alert. - Dr Jamie McFadzean, who gained a PhD in Biological Sciences and is now Vaccination & Research Policy Lead with DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). - Dr Hannes Titeca, who gained a PhD in Economics and is now a Senior Analyst for Ofgem. Each panellist will give a brief overview of their career steps after completing their research degrees at Exeter, and reflect on how their research backgrounds and skills have led to their current positions. There will be time for Q&A.
Learning outcomes: As a result of attending this course, you will:. - Reflect on how researcher skills and backgrounds can be applied in diverse sectors. - Reflect on career development and variety of options available to progress your career while using your existing skills and expertise. - Celebrate the value of researchers and how they apply their skills and expertise in diverse sectors and the wider society.

Presenter(s): Dr Peter O'Rourke & Alice Forty. Elizabeth completed her History PhD in 2014 (after a first degree at Exeter - BA Archaeology & History and an MA in Kurdish Studies). She is working as Conflict Sensitivity and Gender Lead with the charity International Alert. Jamie completed his PhD in Biological Sciences in 2019. He is working as Vaccination & Research Policy Lead with DEFRA. Hannes completed his PhD in Economics in 2022 (following an MA Economics in 2016), following which he worked as a lecturer in Economics at Exeter, then as a Research Manager with Verian Group. He is now working as a Senior Analyst for Ofgem.
